No Wonder it Hurts

I started using those cool looking Vibram shows a back in March and had some good runs. Until it started to hurt... and now I know why. I've always known my foot was a little different than most others', as my 'Big Toe' isn't all that big. I always thought it was just the toe itself. WRONG
X-Ray of my foot
After having a summer of not being able to walk barefoot, and not be able to run more than around 2 miles before the pain forced me to stop, I went to a podiatrist.  As it turns out, the phalanges behind my right 'big' toe is what's short. As a result, rather than having the pressure from my foot strikes distributed evenly across my foot, it's mostly focused on the center two toes.  And that's what's causing the pain.

Needless to say, it's very frustrating.

I just started running in the Sacucony Virrita and like the cushion a lot as a zero drop.

Your X-ray is a bit tough to read due to the resolution but it looks like you have degenerative changes and subchondral cysts in that first metatarsalphalangeal joint which means some of te articulate cartilage is gone. The shape of your foot also could predispose you to stress fractures if not training appropriately with the minimalist footwear. I would try to find a reputable podiatrist or orthopedist and come armed with your questions and goals such as your desire to continue running. Whatever the treatment is it will take time and patience to heal. I wish you the best.

I have toe issues too - gave up on minimal. I run in Saucony Guide's now. They have an 8mm drop and are a little easier on my messed up feet.
